01The country in 30 seconds

New Zealand does not have a digital-nomad visa. That visa category simply does not exist here.

But since 27 January 2025, the standard tourist visa (Visitor Visa) officially allows remote work for foreign clients — no income threshold, as long as you do not work for a New Zealand employer or serve local clients.

Russians need a full visa in advance — there is no visa-free NZeTA for Russia. But the visa centre in Moscow runs as normal, and processing takes about 4-5 weeks.

02Who it's for

This is for people who want to try living in New Zealand for a few months while working remotely, not for people looking for residency or citizenship.

It works if you have income from foreign clients or an employer, you can show enough funds for a tourist visa, and 9 months at a time is fine for you.

It does not work if you need long-term legal status, want to work for a New Zealand employer, or want to serve local clients — none of that is allowed on this visa.

03Entry & visa

Russians do not qualify for NZeTA (the online visa-waiver). Russia is not on New Zealand's visa-waiver list. You need a full Visitor Visa, arranged before you fly.

You can apply online or through the VFS Global visa centre in Moscow. Processing takes about 4-5 weeks based on applicant reports — this is not Schengen, ordinary tourist visas for Russians are not blocked by sanctions.

The visa allows up to 9 months' stay within any 18-month period (the exact length and single/multiple-entry type is at Immigration NZ's discretion).

Since 27 January 2025, Visitor Visa holders (and NZeTA holders, which does not apply to Russians) can legally work remotely for foreign employers and clients while in New Zealand. The rules are simple: no working for a New Zealand employer, no serving New Zealand clients, and you cannot be required at a physical NZ workplace.

There is no set income threshold for this remote-work allowance. But the visitor visa itself still needs the usual proof — you have to show you have enough money for the trip.

There are no direct flights from Russia. The standard route is Emirates via Dubai, about 24-34 hours total. Russian-issued Visa/Mastercard cards do not work abroad since 2022 — sort your money out before you leave.

04Residency & legalization

New Zealand has no path from a tourist visa to residency. In-country extensions are discretionary, not automatic, and you should not count on getting one.

Many people who want to stay longer just leave the country and apply for a new tourist visa instead of extending — a kind of international border run.

Real residency paths in New Zealand go through work visas with a job offer, investor visas, or similar categories. The tourist visa with remote-work permission does not lead to any of them.

05Work & taxes

Foreign income stays exempt from New Zealand tax only if you spend 92 days or less in the country within any 12-month period. That is the standard rule.

If you are from a country with a tax treaty with New Zealand, this can extend to 183 days. Russia technically still has a tax treaty with New Zealand, but since 2023 Russia has unilaterally suspended parts of its treaties with countries it calls 'unfriendly', and New Zealand is on that list. How this affects the 183-day rule is unclear — I could not find an official clarification.

Practical takeaway: do not count on the 183-day window. Treat 92 days in 12 months as your safe limit, and check with a tax advisor if you plan to stay longer.

The New Zealand visa does not resolve your Russian tax obligations either — that is a separate issue you need to sort out yourself.

06Banks, cards & money

Mir cards do not work in New Zealand at all — not in shops, not at ATMs. You need a regular Visa or Mastercard from a non-sanctioned bank. Your Russian bank account will not help abroad since 2022.

Opening a personal account at a New Zealand bank (ANZ, ASB, Westpac, BNZ, Kiwibank) on a tourist visa is hard. Banks usually want an IRD number (NZ tax number) and a confirmed local address — easier to get with a work visa or a longer-term visa than a tourist one.

New Zealand aligns with Western sanctions against Russia, which adds friction — a bank may ask more questions if it sees money connected to Russia, even if you personally are not sanctioned.

It is more practical to arrive with a non-Russian card already set up (Wise, Revolut, or a card from a bank in another country), and only deal with a local account once you are settled and staying longer.

07Renting a place

Look for long-term housing on Trade Me Property and realestate.co.nz — these are the main legit platforms. Shared housing (a room in a flat) is cheaper and easier to find through Flatmates.co.nz.

Rent in Auckland and Wellington is roughly similar. Queenstown is noticeably more expensive — it is a small town with a tourism-driven economy and limited housing, and rent there can run about one and a half times higher than Auckland.

The classic scam is being asked to wire a deposit for a place you have not seen in person or on a video call with a real person. Never send money before verifying it.

08SIM card & internet

The three main carriers are Spark, One NZ, and 2degrees. A regular prepaid SIM with a data plan costs about NZ$30-55 a month.

Travel eSIMs are cheaper upfront, around NZ$12-35 for 5-15GB, handy for your first days before you sort out a local number.

Home fibre internet costs about NZ$70-90 a month unlimited, and it is fast and reliable even in Queenstown, not just the big cities.

09Healthcare & insurance

Russians do not get free access to New Zealand's public healthcare — that is only for Australia and the UK under reciprocal agreements. Everyone else pays out of pocket.

When you apply for a visitor visa, you have to state how you will cover medical costs — your own money or insurance. Immigration NZ strongly recommends full insurance for the whole trip.

Private insurance costs about NZ$1,200-2,000 a year for someone in their 30s, more as you get older. A regular doctor visit without insurance costs about NZ$50-90.

10Transport

Auckland and Wellington have buses, trains, and ferries (Wellington also has harbour ferries), paid with a local transport card (AT HOP in Auckland, Snapper in Wellington). Uber and similar apps work in both cities.

Queenstown is small, and buses have limited routes and schedules. Most people rent a car there, especially for driving through the mountains.

Driving is on the left. A foreign licence works for visitors, but check the current rules on international licences and how long they are valid before a long driving trip — these rules change from time to time.

11Safety & important laws

New Zealand is one of the safer countries to live in overall — violent crime rates are low, and police are usually unarmed.

The country is seismically active — earthquakes happen regularly, and Auckland even sits on a volcanic field within the city. It is worth learning what to do during an earthquake and keeping a civil-defence app on your phone.

Drugs, including marijuana, are not legal — a 2020 referendum to legalize cannabis failed. Getting caught with drugs can cause real legal trouble.

Car break-ins and pickpocketing happen in tourist spots like Queenstown car parks and central Auckland. Normal caution handles most of it.

12How much money you need per month

Total: NZ$3100-4200 a month per person (roughly $1,850-2,500) in Auckland or Wellington, not counting visa costs or flights. In Queenstown, rent alone can add NZ$800-1200 on top.

13Step-by-step moving plan

1. Check the current Visitor Visa rules and remote-work allowance on the Immigration New Zealand website.
2. Gather documents: passport, proof of income from foreign clients, proof of funds for the trip, and a return ticket or onward travel plan.
3. Apply for the visa online or through VFS Global in Moscow, and allow 4-5 weeks for processing.
4. Set up a non-Russian card (Wise, Revolut, or a foreign bank) before you leave — Mir and Russian Visa/Mastercard do not work abroad.
5. Book your flight — there are no direct routes, the standard one is Emirates via Dubai.
6. Get health insurance for the whole trip before you apply for the visa.
7. Book housing for your first 2-4 weeks, and never wire a deposit without seeing the place in person or on video.
8. Get a local SIM or eSIM (Spark, One NZ, 2degrees) once you land.
9. Find long-term housing through Trade Me Property or Flatmates.co.nz, and pick your city: Auckland for work and energy, Wellington for a compact capital feel, Queenstown for nature and views but at a higher price.
10. Track your day counts: 92 days for the tax exemption, 9 months out of 18 for the visa, and plan a border run or new application ahead of time.
